Netifice Communications, Inc., a leading provider of Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions and other managed IP services to businesses worldwide, today announced that Unified Western Grocers, Inc., the largest retailer-owned wholesale grocery cooperative in the Western United States, is deploying the Netifice Retail Connect VPN service to support data communications between its member stores. Currently, UWG is rolling out the service to increase bandwidth and decrease connectivity costs for 140 stores and plans to add an additional 200 members following the initial implementation.

"In deciding to implement a broadband infrastructure to support data communications with our stores, we were concerned with being able to increase the value to our members and select the right provider. We were also very concerned with the resources required to rollout and manage the network," said Dan Swofford, Retail Technology Products Manager for United Western Grocers. "After a thorough selection process, we found that Netifice's fully managed Retail Connect VPN service was unique, not only because it eliminated most of our management issues, but also because it could work with just about every access provider to deliver a consistent platform for supporting our critical applications. Netifice allows us to implement a fully managed hybrid network of DSL, Cable, Satellite, and Frame Relay to meet our diverse geographic base. Our members are already seeing the benefits in the short time that we have been a customer."

UWG and its members turned to Netifice to provide connectivity for critical applications that require high reliability and performance. Netifice Retail Connect is enabling the stores to conduct electronic authorization and payment services with leading credit card processors. The company provides a reliable and secure path to the payment processors with redundant connections that ensure the greatest uptime possible. Additionally, Netifice provides automated dial back up in case the broadband connection becomes unavailable, virtually eliminating any disruption in service. Additionally, Netifice is providing UWG with Internet anti-virus and anti-spam capabilities, which are critical to the protection of UWG members.

Prior to Netifice, UWG used a 56K Frame Relay network, which was expensive, slow and limited the number of stores that could tie into the network. Netifice's broadband VPN service also allows all of UWG's members to connect to the network easily and inexpensively. In addition, Netifice provides UWG with significantly higher performance, so that the company can deploy new, leading edge applications.

"As more companies begin to view broadband as an enterprise-class means for communicating with multiple locations and remote users, they are also recognizing that it requires increased management resources to ensure top quality and performance," said Stafford Brown, Vice President of Sales at Netifice. "United Western Grocers turned to Netifice because we are the leading provider of fully managed broadband VPN services in the country. We allow our customers to focus on the activities and applications that are critical to their success without worrying about the performance, management or reliability of their underlying broadband VPN."

Previously, UWG's IT department managed, monitored and supported the entire infrastructure for all retailers. As the user base grew, it needed a scalable solution that reduced management requirements. Netifice delivers a fully managed service with 24X7 monitoring. It also provides automatic replacement of key equipment, so that if a router fails, the retailer can be back online within 12 hours in many cases.

Netifice's innovative customer portal, SmartWorX, was central to UWG's implementation of the company's VPN services, with its implementation team using the tool daily to oversee the entire VPN rollout. According to Swofford, "No other provider we talked to offered a Web-based tool for real-time visibility."
