Huawei-3Com Selects Ample Communications' Multiport Ethernet MACs for Next Generation Ethernet Switches; Harrier Enables Huawei-3Com to Significantly Reduce Overall Systems Cost for Customers

Ample Communications, a leading provider of communications silicon for wire line network systems, today announced that Huawei-3Com has selected Ample's Harrier 10/100/1000 Multiport Ethernet MAC silicon to provide Ethernet aggregation for its mid-range and high-end routers and switches. Huawei-3Com is a joint venture company established by Huawei and 3Com Corp. in November 2003. Shipment of the Huawei-3Com switch line cards using Harrier-24 devices began in fourth quarter 2005.

Ample's Harrier-24 allows Huawei-3Com to take advantage of Ethernet's bursty nature by applying statistical multiplexing techniques to aggregate a larger number of ports, using Harrier's intelligent oversubscription technology. Since the Harrier family is pin-for-pin compatible, additional Harrier designs providing both oversubscribed and line-rate Ethernet aggregation can be incorporated into Huawei-3Com designs in the future with minimal engineering changes.

"Harrier provides us with high-density Ethernet aggregation, combined with superior intelligent oversubscription technology to insure data integrity in network systems that use statistical multiplexing. This solution helps us keep system costs low while providing a reliable, feature-rich product offering for a wide range of applications," said Huawei-3Com's R&D Department.

"Huawei-3Com's selection of Harrier is an important indication of the widening recognition of Harrier as a tool for lowering Gigabit Ethernet network costs, while increasing density and incorporating the required intelligence to support advanced services," said Mathew Steinberg, director of business development for Ample Communications. "Through its incorporation into Huawei-3Com's network equipment, the benefits of Harrier's intelligence will now extend to new network infrastructure projects underway in Asia and other parts of the world."
