Alien Technology®, a leading provider of RFID products, today
announced that retired USAF General John W. Handy has been elected
to the company's Board of Directors, bringing nearly four decades
of defense, transportation and logistics experience and expertise
to the Alien board. Prior to his retirement from the Air Force in
October 2005, General Handy was Commander of the U.S. Transportation
Command (USTRANSCOM), the single manager for global air, land and
sea transportation for the U.S. Department of Defense. He was also
the Distribution Process Owner for the entire DOD. In that capacity,
he was charged with improving the global DOD supply chain.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome John Handy, a strong proponent
of RFID technology to the Alien Board of Directors," said Tom
Baruch, Chairman of the Board, Alien Technology. "John possesses
unparalleled expertise in global supply chains and large-scale logistical
systems and we are fortunate to be able to leverage his experience
and guidance as the use of RFID continues to proliferate around the
world."
"I am deeply honored to be joining Alien's board; it is exciting
to become affiliated with such an innovative and visionary company,"
said General Handy. "In my assignments as a senior leader in
the DOD, with extensive global logistics responsibilities, I know
how critically dependent we are on RFID technology in TRANSCOM. RFID
technology will have profound and lasting effects on the way that
we handle and move materiel in the military and in industry."
General Handy will be joining Horizon Lines, LLC as the Executive
Vice President in February 2006. Horizon Lines is the largest container
shipping company in the Jones Act trade. At the time of his retirement
from the Air Force, he was also Commander of the Air Mobility Command,
based at Scott Air Force Base. Prior to that, he was Vice Chief of
Staff for the U.S. Air Force. A command pilot, General Handy has also
commanded the 21st Air Force and served as Deputy Chief of Staff for
Installations and Logistics for the Air Force and as the Air Force's
Director of Programs and Evaluations.
General Handy is a member of the Board of Directors of ARC (American
Roll-On Roll-off Carrier and of AAL (American Auto Logistics). He
also serves on the Board of Trustees of Methodist College, Fayetteville,
NC and the St. Louis Science Center in St Louis, Missouri. He holds
a B.A. degree in History from Methodist College; an M.S. degree in
Systems Management from the University of Southern California; and
an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Methodist College.
