Archemix Corporation Names Michael Kallelis
Vice President Of Manufacturing
CAMBRIDGE, MA
April 19, 2005
Archemix Corp., the privately-held biopharmaceutical company focused
on discovering and developing aptamer-based therapeutics, announced
today the appointment of Michael Kallelis as Vice President of Manufacturing.
Mr. Kallelis will have responsibility for directing the Company's
Manufacturing Group and all related efforts.
Prior to joining Archemix, Mr. Kallelis served as the Executive Vice
President and General Manager of Avecia Biotechnology, Inc. Over a
24-year manufacturing career, Mr. Kallelis has developed significant
experience and expertise in solid phase oligonucleotide synthesis
and process development of phosphoramidites. In his role at Avecia,
Mr. Kallelis managed one of the single largest oligonucleotide synthesis
plants in the world. Prior to joining Avecia, Mr. Kallelis co-founded
and served as Chief Operating Officer of Boston BioSystems, Inc.,
a major producer of oligonucleotides for therapeutics and diagnostics.
In this role, Mr. Kallelis managed all chemical operations, oligonucleotide
production and process development. Mr. Kallelis has also held various
operating positions at BioSepra and Millipore Corporation.
Mike has extensive experience in the area of oligonucleotide synthesis
and process development and will lead this important multifunctional
area at Archemix, said Dr. Errol De Souza, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Archemix. "Mike possesses the unique combination of
manufacturing experience and operational leadership skills necessary
to ensure that our manufacturing capabilities keep pace with our rapidly
expanding pipeline of therapeutic aptamers. We are delighted to have
Mike as a part of our team and look forward to his contributions and
the generation of shareholder value."
"Archemix is at an exciting stage of its development," commented
Mr. Kallelis. "I look forward to leveraging my experience in
oligonucleotide synthesis and process development to bolster Archemix's
chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) efforts. Our efforts in
manufacturing and process development will support an exiting and
burgeoning pipeline of aptamer therapeutics."
About Aptamers
Aptamers are single-stranded nucleic acids that form well-defined
three-dimensional shapes, allowing them to bind to target molecules
in a manner that is conceptually similar to antibodies. Aptamers combine
the optimal characteristics of small molecules and antibodies, including
high specificity and affinity, chemical and biological stability,
low toxicity and immunogenicity and the ability to target protein-protein
interactions. In contrast to monoclonal antibodies, aptamers are chemically
synthesized rather than biologically expressed, offering a significant
cost advantage. As therapeutic agents, aptamers have demonstrated
clinical biological efficacy and have excellent, tunable pharmacokinetic
properties.
About Archemix Corp.
Archemix Corp. is a privately-held biopharmaceutical company based
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company's mission is to develop aptamers
as a class of directed therapeutics for the treatment of human disease.
Because of their unique properties and proven efficacy, aptamers are
a superior alternative to biologics and small molecules and will be
a major class of drugs for the treatment of unmet medical needs.
Archemix's aptamer expertise is complimented by a dominant patent
estate comprised of over 220 issued and 230 pending patents covering
the identification, composition and use of therapeutic aptamers. In
addition to the company's core aptamer generation technology, Archemix
possesses strong expertise in both preclinical and clinical drug development.
