Jazz at Lincoln Center Deploys LightPointe's System

The not-for-profit arts organization, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, is using LightPointe's free-space optics (FSO) system as a building connection solution.

The organization selected LightPointe's FlightLight Gigabit Ethernet optical wireless bridge to connect an administrative office with the newly opened Frederick P. Rose Hall, located across the street.

The Frederick P. Rose Hall is a $128 million, 100,000-square-foot facility for jazz music that was opened last month in midtown Manhattan.

The use of fiber optics to connect the facilities was ruled out due to rights-of-way issues. Microwave radio was ruled out due to spectrum licensing concerns.

The FSO system connects the existing 100 Mbps network in the administrative office to the Hall. The organization needed a high-capacity system for the connection and to operate its ticketing software, custom databases and e-mail system.

"The FlightLite has performed flawlessly during our inaugural events at Rose Hall this fall," stated Fred Murphy, associate director of information technology for Jazz at Lincoln Center. "Without LightPointe, I don't know how we'd be able to provide Ethernet-class connectivity to our staff at the new facility. We had ruled out all other options, including T1 lines, which at 1.5 Mbps, simply didn't provide the bandwidth we need to operate a world-class business."

The FlightLite is part of LightPointe's portfolio of FSO systems, which enable voice, data and video links at speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps.
